Riders who cycle in pelotons, where they pack closely together as they ride, have been accused of hogging entire roads by refusing to give way to motorists, flicking v-signs at car drivers and speeding through villages. Warning signs are now being put up to urge riders to cycle in single file rather than pack formations when negotiating the narrow routes across the Yorkshire Dales.
The signs come at a time when British Cycling is already battling to keep Yorkshire Tour de France routes open after a spate of deaths were revealed earlier this year. When you do overtake them you get a rude gesture.

ONLY a quarter of fixed speed cameras in West Yorkshire are actually switched on and catching offenders, new figures have revealed. Data released by 36 of the 45 police forces in the UK found that four have no fixed speed cameras at all and 13 have fewer than half actively catching speeding drivers. A Freedom of Information request was sent to all 45 forces and their speed camera partnerships asking how many fixed speed cameras they have and how many are active.
Nine refused to disclose the information or failed to respond. The figures cover all police fixed speed cameras, but not the mobile devices forces also use. All forces and speed camera partnerships that responded said they deployed regular mobile speed cameras across their areas. They also said they regularly review which fixed cameras are turned on. West Yorkshire-based road safety charity Brake described the figures as concerning and called for all cameras to be switched on, while AA president Edmund King said the high number of inactive cameras was down to pressure on budgets.
The forces which said none of their fixed speed cameras were active were Cleveland, Durham, North Yorkshire and Northamptonshire.

On January 1st , the former ‘Big Four’ railway companies: The rest was made up of service engines and Departmental locomotives. Following nationalisation in , six new BR Regions were formed, their new boundaries corresponding closely to the lines of the former ‘Big Four’ railway companies. As a result, many locomotives from an operational standpoint worked beyond their arbitrary Regions, so in many ways it is meaningless to classify any particular class of locomotive as belonging to any one of the six Regions during the transition from steam.
For example, it was not unusual for the Stanier ‘Black 5’ and in particular the new BR Standard classes, to be found working hundreds of miles from the Region they were initially allocated. I have recently been contacted by Colin Mason, who currently works and lives in Japan. Colin was born in the North East and spent his grammar school years living in Corbridge, Northumberland.
He has started research for a plan to build a model of Corbridge station between Newcastle and Hexham in its heyday of the s through into the 40s when it actually had a significant level of traffic serving local freight, 3 timber yards, a gasworks and so on. However he has found little information on the Internet beyond the track plan from the old OS maps copy below and a small number of photographs.
This has left him with large gaps in the overall picture, such as close-up pictures of the signal box, an NER gantry type similar to those which survive at Wylam and Hexham, but which seemingly burnt down in the early 60’s.
More than of them were in Scarborough and more than were in Whiby. Most offenders – 1, – will have the chance to go on speed awareness courses to learn from their mistakes. North Yorkshire Police say the schemes are proven to change behaviour. The other drivers caught by the camera were fined.

In the days before the Internet, many single people who wanted to find a relationship might have posted a personal ad in a local newspaper or perhaps gave telephone dating a whirl. While these types of dating were great for their time, they have mostly been replaced with Internet dating, which works in a similar way but is much more effective and easier to do. When using an online dating service, instead of sending a personal ad in the post to a newspaper, you would simply type a short profile about yourself into a dating website such as ours, for other members to find and read.

Roads A habitual cannabis user, who killed a “truly outstanding” young doctor when he ploughed into his motorcycle while overtaking at almost 90 miles per hour, has been jailed for seven years. Jake Rogers, 22, had already amassed ten points on his licence in just 16 months , when he killed Dr Alex Boorman in the high speed smash last December.
He later tested positive for cannabis and admitted having smoked two or three joints prior to the crash. Rogers sobbed uncontrollably as Teesside Crown Court heard how Dr Boorman’s life had been “needlessly taken and wasted” due to his “idiotic” driving on a blind bend on the A19 in North Yorkshire. Dr Alex Boorman and his girlfriend Alex Bellard Dr Boorman, a talented rugby player, had been on his way to work as a junior doctor in the orthopaedics department at York Hospital, when Rogers smashed into him as he overtook two cars at 87 miles per hour.
The court heard how Rogers’ year-old girlfriend, Olivia Thackeray, who yelled a warning to slow down, also suffered life changing injuries in the smash and that his friend Simon Briggs was also seriously hurt. Rogers admitted causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst over the limit for cannabis. He admitted smoking two or three joints in the early hours of the day of the crash, which happened at around 7pm on December 7th last year.
Jake Rogers was driving like an idiot His speedometer stuck at 87 mph after the crash which happened in a 60mph zone on a sweeping bend on an unlit section of road. One witness said his Vauxhall Viva was so close behind her she could not see his headlights in her mirror moments before Rogers tried to pass her Range Rover, but hit Dr Boorman’s Suzuki motorcycle instead.

A Queen Street exhibit. The Beeching Report recommended that British Rail should wash its hands of museums, resulting in a campaign to create a new national museum. It was to be the first English national museum outside London, established to house the expanding collection, then located in Clapham, and in the existing York Railway Museum at Queen Street. The Transport Act also usefully ordained that the museum had first claim on redundant items from British Rail without cost.
Xenophobic southerners were incredulous that a national museum could be located outside London. They were led by Lord Montague of Beaulieu, who tabled a special debate in the House of Lords arguing that it was inconceivable that any visitor to the UK would want to go all that way to the provinces to visit a museum, not least one in York. Peterborough, Harrow and Crystal Palace were all in the race as possible venues.
